Cluster

Cluster
Timeline: 6 Weeks, April - May 2021
Cluster is a modular lighting family that takes inspiration from geodesic structures. The family consists of three different triangular lights that can be placed in various configurations to create unique and visually stunning lighting displays. Constructed from folded brushed steel sheet and frosted acrylic panels, the Cluster family of lights offers both durability and elegance. Whether used individually or combined, the Cluster lights provide a versatile and contemporary lighting solution.

Justification
I set out to design a family of accent/mood lights for medium to large open space homes, with a primary focus on offering consumers the utmost level of customization. Early sketches formed the groundwork, serving as the inspiration for this project. The goal was to create lights that would empower users to personalize their living spaces according to their preferences and create distinctive ambiences.

Research
During my design exploration, some of my inital concepts reminded me of geodomes, which sparked my curiosity to delve deeper into geodesic structures. This piqued my interest in exploring various modifications and adaptations that could be applied to geodesic structures, blending the organic and angular elements to create visually intriguing and functional forms.
Ideation & Form-Finding
After researching Geodesic structures, I began experimenting with different configurations.

Final Design & Conclusion
I created three distinct modules based off of my prototypes, with sides of either length A or B These modules could be connected together to create a variety structures. The subtle variance between modules helps create an organic aesthetic when the modules are connected together. If I had the chance to complete the project again I would have liked to prototype more with steel to see how the final material would interact. The project was completed during the pandemic prototyping equipment was limited.
